Alibaba announces plan to expand global data-centre capacity to 20+ GW by 2032
Alibaba Group CEO Yu Yunming announced at the Apsara 2026 conference that Alibaba Cloud will expand its global data-centre capacity to more than 20 gigawatts by 2032. The company cited constraints from global AI data-centre supply shortages as a current limitation on computing capacity growth, and said it will actively invest in AI infrastructure alongside partners to meet rapidly growing artificial-intelligence demand.
China Mobile's Zhongwei data center powered by 500 MW solar farm
China Mobile's data center facility in Zhongwei, Ningxia, began receiving electricity directly from a 500-megawatt solar power station in May 2026, with green power now accounting for over 80 percent of the facility's electricity consumption. A complementary 1.5-gigawatt wind farm under construction nearby is scheduled to connect to the grid in September, enabling round-the-clock green power supply. The combined solar and wind projects will supply approximately 2.29 billion kilowatt-hours annually to support Zhongwei's growing data center cluster, which now hosts facilities from six of China's top ten internet data center operators and major companies including Alibaba, Baidu, and Tencent.
