Contact Energy Announces 250-MW Data Center Exploration at Stratford Site
New Zealand utility Contact Energy announced it has partnered with CDC Data Centres to explore construction of a 250-MW data center at the company's retired Taranaki Combined Cycle gas plant site in Stratford. The facility would have 350 MW of total peak load including ancillary requirements and would be powered by long-term renewable energy contracts tied to Contact's 11-TWh pipeline of geothermal, wind and solar projects, with co-located battery storage. The project remains at an early stage pending approvals, anchor tenants and financing. Contact also reported strong financial results with net profit up 62% to NZ$423 million for fiscal year 2026, driven by the Manawa Energy acquisition and higher renewable generation.
