Iranian drone strikes and cyberattacks have directly targeted hyperscale data-centre facilities in the Middle East since March 2026, marking the first deliberate targeting of commercial cloud infrastructure during active conflict. Amazon Web Services sites in the UAE and Bahrain sustained structural damage and power disruption, with subsequent strikes on Oracle facilities in Dubai. The attacks have also extended to critical infrastructure outside the region, with Iranian-linked hackers shutting down a UK gas-fired power plant for four days in July. Security researchers attribute the escalation to retaliation following US and Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear and military targets, and Iranian state media has publicly designated cloud-provider facilities as legitimate targets.
