    Rochester Hills extends data center moratorium to mid-March 2027

    Rochester Hills City Council extended its moratorium on data center applications from mid-September 2026 to mid-March 2027, doubling the initial six-month period. The extension gives city staff additional time to update zoning ordinances to address impacts including noise, vibration, light pollution, water and electricity demands, and compatibility with residential areas. Council members discussed setback requirements of half a mile or more from homes and independent power sources for hyperscale facilities. Similar moratoriums are in place across Metro Detroit communities including Sterling Heights, Gibraltar, Northville, Pontiac, Springfield Township and Taylor.
