  Liquid Intelligent Technologies deploys Google Taara optical wireless links at Lagos data centres

  Liquid Intelligent Technologies, a Cassava Technologies subsidiary, has deployed nearly a dozen Taara optical wireless communication links across Lagos, Nigeria over the past two years in partnership with Google's Taara division. The links use narrow light beams to transmit data wirelessly at up to 20 Gbit/s over 20 km, extending high-capacity connectivity from African data centres to enterprise customers in areas where traditional fibre deployment is costly or difficult. Taara enables link installation in hours rather than weeks and complements fibre infrastructure without requiring trenching, spectrum licenses, or major civil works. Liquid is exploring expansion of the technology to other Nigerian cities including Abuja, Ibadan, and Kano.

  Nigeria mandates onshore payment data storage by January 2027

  Nigeria's Central Bank issued a circular on 15 June 2026 requiring banks, fintechs, mobile money operators and other payment system participants to store and manage all locally generated payment transaction data within Nigeria by 1 January 2027. The mandate supersedes previous cross-border data transfer arrangements and creates immediate demand for hyperscale data-centre capacity in the country. Nigeria's electronic payment volumes reached 38.7 billion transactions in 2023 and are projected to exceed 60 billion in 2026. The regulation is driving infrastructure investment, with operators including Equinix, Airtel Nxtra and Kasi Cloud announcing or commencing major facilities in Lagos, though power-grid constraints remain a critical bottleneck.

  Kasi Cloud has commissioned the Lekki campus, West Africa's first hyperscale-ready, AI-capable carrier-neutral data center facility in Lagos, Nigeria. The facility is strategically positioned near major subsea cable landing stations and is designed to scale to approximately 100MW of IT capacity. The campus will serve Nigerian enterprises, financial institutions, and government agencies with sovereign cloud and AI infrastructure.
