University of Lisbon invests €20M in two sovereign cloud datacenters
Universidade de Lisboa is investing over €20 million to build two new datacenters across its Oeiras and Cidade Universitária campuses as part of a sovereign cloud infrastructure project for scientific research. The project is developed collaboratively by IST, Faculty of Sciences, GIMM, and the university's rectory. Construction is expected to complete by October 2028. This initiative aims to create independent cloud computing capacity for the Portuguese scientific community.
Start Campus announces SIN02, 180-200MW AI data centre at Portugal Sines campus
Start Campus announced SIN02, its second hyperscale facility at the 1.2GW Sines Data Campus in Portugal, designed for AI and HPC workloads with 180-200MW capacity and ultra-high density up to 700kW per rack. Construction has commenced with completion expected by end of 2027, and the facility will operate on 100% renewable energy with seawater cooling for zero freshwater use. Nscale will be the full tenant, delivering the data centre to Microsoft, and the facility is planned to host 66,000 Nvidia Vera Rubin chips. Start Campus also signed an MoU with EDP to develop additional renewable capacity in Portugal to power the campus without impacting local energy supply.
