Kepler Communications brings space-based data centres online
Toronto-based Kepler Communications announced it has activated the first commercial low-Earth orbit satellite constellation delivering real-time space-based computing to commercial and government customers. Each satellite in the network is equipped with optical terminals enabling laser links between space, air, and ground assets, allowing data to be processed directly in orbit rather than waiting for downlink to Earth. The system reduces latency, enables AI processing, and supports autonomous space operations. Kepler said it will expand the global optical relay network in 2028 with new spacecraft to support data rates up to 100 Gbps.

Oakville enacts one-year data centre moratorium as Ontario municipalities tighten rules
Oakville town council approved a one-year moratorium on new data centres on Tuesday, August 12, becoming the first Ontario municipality to formally enact such a pause. The decision follows concerns about noise, vibration, emissions and land-use impacts from facilities powering artificial intelligence. Mississauga is preparing to vote on its own moratorium next month, and other Ontario municipalities including Toronto and Waterloo Region are studying regulatory frameworks for data centre development. The action comes after Hive Digital Technologies announced plans for a 320-megawatt AI facility in the Greater Toronto Area, with land records indicating a Hive subsidiary purchased property in Oakville.

Management also disclosed advanced negotiations for a new continental European partnership targeting CAD 800 million in gross asset value and identified approximately 250 MW of potential power capacity across three Greater Toronto Area sites for data-centre development.
