  Austin City Council unanimously approved a resolution on August 27 to begin creating a regulatory framework for data centers, including updates to the land development code and requirements for water use, energy use, noise, and lighting. The council mandated binding regulations by end of 2026, with plans to ban larger data centers and freeze approvals of new projects exceeding 20 megawatts or 85 million gallons of water annually until policy is finalized.

  Austin County residents protest CleanSpark data center in Sealy

  Dozens of Austin County residents gathered on August 15, 2026, at a CleanSpark community meeting in Sealy, Texas to protest a proposed 285-megawatt data center. Residents arrived in tractors, trailers and trucks to voice concerns about impacts including water use, noise, light pollution, and effects on migratory birds. CleanSpark stated the facility would use only 10 acres of a 270-acre property, employ a closed-loop cooling system, and generate millions in tax revenue. The protest comes days after Governor Greg Abbott announced data-centre compliance standards for Google, Rowan and CleanSpark.
